Throughout history, people from every corner of the world have described encounters with something beyond the physical: a spiritual realm that exists alongside our own.
Whether you look to ancient traditions, modern mystics, or near-death experiences, the message is the same: Our physical reality is only one layer of a much larger, multidimensional system.
The spiritual realm is an energetic field of consciousness. Itโs universally recognized among almost every faith, but it’s still a huge mystery that nobody fully understands.
We may not consciously remember these energetic realms while vacationing here on planet Earth, but they certainly exist because we’re always connected to them.
After years of exploring spiritual teachings and practices from around the globe, I want to share what Iโve learned about the spiritual realm, how it works, and why understanding it can completely change the way you see your life here and now.
What Is the Spiritual Realm?

The spiritual realm is a vast, non-physical dimension of existence. Itโs often seen as the true home of the soul, the place where consciousness originates and to which itโs always connected, even while weโre living in a human body.
One way to picture it is to imagine the whole of reality as a cube. Our universe, or otherwise this material reality, is just one face of that cube…
If you look at a cube face-on, you don’t see depth, you don’t see the other faces. You just see a square, which is what we’re limited to via human perception.
This is why many of us don’t recognize that reality is so much more extensive than what we can see, touch, and feel. We’re experiencing life through a linear brain rather than a deeper, energetic center that can perceive the entire cube.
The spirit realm makes up the rest of the cube. Other dimensions of existence are always here, always now. We have just lost the ability to perceive them.
And you might be thinking… “Well, that sounds like a load of crap. If I can’t see it, then how do I know it’s real?”
Because you can perceive it! But it takes time and commitment to your spiritual growth to view things through a different lens.
Through spiritual practice, deep meditation, or altered states of awareness, we can ‘turn’ the cube and glimpse those hidden sides.
Another way to think about.
If our reality is the stage, the spirit realm is everything happening backstage. The lights, the script, the crew, and the hidden forces that make the show possible. You may not see it from the audience, but without it, there would be no performance.
Although the spiritual realm contains different dimensions, each with a foreign experience of consciousness, itโs really one interconnected whole.
These planes of consciousness are not separate worlds, but different expressions of the same ultimate reality. Our everyday life feels real, and it is! But itโs only one fragment of the vast, eternal existence that supports it.
Does the Spirit Realm Mean Thereโs a God?
Most spiritual traditions teach that the spiritual realm originates from a single, infinite source. Different faiths call it God, Source, the Divine, the Universal Intelligence, or Pure Consciousness.
The label doesn’t matter.
I share that belief, though not in the sense of a figure in the clouds judging your every move. Instead, think of God as the deepest level of reality, an endless field of consciousness expressing itself in infinite ways.
Everything we see, feel, and experience in both the physical world and the higher spiritual realms is part of that expression of god, even the suffering, even the horror. It’s all part of this infinite, creative expression.
From this perspective, God is all that exists, and we are all manifestations of God.
That true embodiment, not just conceptual understanding, is what we might call enlightenment. It’s the foundational truth of reality that people like Jesus and Buddha saw firsthand.
So, in this sense, every dimension, every soul, every moment of creation flows from this boundless Source.
Just as an artist might endlessly paint, sculpt, and experiment simply because he can, God creates different paintings. One energetic and formless. One that’s material. One heavenly, one hellish, and probably many more I’m not even slightly aware of.
Understanding the Spiritual Realm
We’ve already used a couple of metaphors in this article. Now, let’s bring in the onion!
Picture the spiritual realms like an onion, each layer representing a different dimension of consciousness. The closer you move toward the center, the closer you are to Source, the point where duality dissolves, and everything merges into one unified awareness.
This divine state of consciousness goes by the names of Brahman, Samadhi, Bliss, Divinity, Paradise, Heaven, and probably has many more labels.
Our physical reality is like an outer layer of this onion. Here in the material world, life is full of chaos, contrast, beauty, and growth. This diversity exists because this realm, or dimension, is a little further from the Source, which allows consciousness to experience itself in countless ways.
On the peripheries of the onion are the most disconnected dimensions or realms.
In the lack of connection to source, there exists suffering. We understand these realms as hellish realms, which aren’t a good time to experience because they lack everything that comes from the source… light.
At the core, though, we are multidimensional beings. Part of your awareness is always connected to the spirit realm and even higher realms beyond it. Youโre not just in the physical world. Youโre simultaneously existing across multiple dimensions right now.
And yesโฆ at the deepest level, you are God. But before we get a big head, remember thereโs a lot of inner work to do before reaching the level of enlightenment where you fully realize that truth.
Because these realms are energetic, there are no rigid borders. You donโt ‘travel’ to the spiritual realm, youโre already there. Itโs just that your physical mind and body act like a filter, obscuring that connection.
Spiritual practices like meditation, prayer, astral projection, and energy work donโt take you somewhere new. They shift your awareness along the cord of your consciousness, rotate the cube, and change the datastream, allowing you to perceive other dimensions more clearly.
The body is your ticket into the physical realm, but when that ticket expires, the soul naturally returns to the foundational energetic reality it came from.
Accessing the Spirit Realm

At its heart, spirituality is about reconnecting with the deeper layers of our consciousness, the part of us that exists beyond the physical.
Across cultures and traditions, spiritual practices are used to tap into higher realms of consciousness, allowing us to access guidance, insight, and a sense of connection that goes far beyond everyday awareness.
This shared knowing has shaped humanity more than any single invention or discovery. Itโs a universal truth embedded deep in our collective memory. There is more to life than what we can see, hear, and touch.
Every tradition has a different path to access these higher realms of consciousness. Shamanic traditions often use plant medicines. Monks go inwards via meditation and discipline. Some people go through prayer, worship, or fasting.
There is no specific path to access the spirit realm, but many paths.
We can all tap into it, not by seeking outwards, but by going inwards to excavate a deeper part of our consciousness that is already connected to it.
What Does the Science Say About Spirituality?
Science is often painted as the opposite of spirituality, but in truth, theyโre slowly walking toward the same horizon. The deeper science digs, the closer it comes to the same mysteries spiritual seekers have explored for thousands of years.
Weโre not fully there yet, but the gap is closing.
Quantum physics is a perfect example. At this level, the familiar rules of reality start to unravel. Particles can exist in multiple places at once. The act of observation can change an outcome. Time and space donโt behave the way we experience them here in the physical realm.
And concepts like higher dimensions?
Theyโre not just for mystics anymore. Scientists are actively exploring them. Itโs as if weโve gone full circle, using hard data to approach what ancient wisdom already hinted at.
For centuries, science dismissed these ideas in favor of purely material explanations. Now, itโs using the same tools of logic and reason to validate them.
If the trend continues, itโs only a matter of time before the language of physics and the language of spirituality start describing the same thing: a reality far deeper, more complex, and more connected than weโve ever imagined.
Higher and Lower Realms

The spiritual realm isnโt one uniform space. Itโs made up of many spiritual realms and dimensions, each carrying its own density of energy.
Some planes are a manifestation of light, love, and bliss. These are what many would call the higher spiritual realms. Others feel dense, chaotic, or even hellish. Between these extremes lie many middle layers, each offering unique lessons and experiences of consciousness.
Our physical universe sits somewhere in the middle.
Itโs far denser than the highest realms, yet still capable of moments of pure beauty and light. The denser a realm is, the more itโs shaped by energies like fear, hatred, and division. The more disconnected it is from the Source.
Your vibration plays a huge role in where you find yourself in this vast cosmic structure. Things such as your thoughts, emotions, and actions contribute to it. Vibration influences not only your life here but also your experience in other dimensions of the spirit realm.
Everything in the physical realm eventually fades, but the soul continues its journey. Many traditions describe this as reincarnation, which is a process guided by karmic energy.
Karma isnโt about punishment or reward. Rather, it’s the energetic imprint left by your vibration, actions, intentions, and lessons. This imprint helps determine where your soul travels next in the spiritual realms and what experiences it will encounter.
In Eastern traditions, this ongoing cycle is called samsara.
It continues until the soul gains enough wisdom to break free from illusion. Reaching this state, known as moksha, means the soul reunites with the highest consciousness and is no longer bound to the wheel of birth and death.
The Purpose of the Soul Journey

From a purely materialist view, consciousness depends entirely on the brain. If the brain stops, so does consciousness, which would make the idea of a soul impossible. Any experience of awareness beyond the body, in this view, is simply an illusion created by neural activity.
Spiritual traditions see it differently.
They teach that consciousness isnโt created by the brain at all, rather it flows through it, much like a signal passing through a radio. The mind receives and interprets it, but it doesnโt generate it. This understanding is at the heart of the soulโs existence.
Your soul is always connected to the spirit realm. What you experience as your everyday awareness is just a small projection of your higher self. This is the vast, eternal aspect of you that remains beyond the limits of time and space.
Think of your body as a vehicle and your consciousness as the driver. The driver canโt be mistaken for the vehicle, yet the vehicle canโt function without one.
You are not your body or your mind. You are something far more expansive than you can imagine from a human perspective. The soul is your immense consciousness, of which you only experience a fraction here on Earth. And that soul itself is just a drop in the ocean of an even greater intelligence we might call God.
I see souls as the building blocks of God, like individual cells forming a living body. On our own, we might seem insignificant, but together we create something immeasurably greater.
If you think of God as that universal body, it doesnโt micromanage each cell. Just as you donโt consciously control every cell in your own body, the Divine doesnโt interfere in every detail of our lives or our dimension.
This means we canโt blame God for our mistakes or the challenges we face. Lifeโs imperfections arenโt flaws in the system. They give us the freedom to choose, to make errors, to learn through trial and error, and to grow from every experience.
Remove free will, and you remove the learning process. If our purpose in the spiritual realm is to evolve, then we have to be left to our own devices.
It may feel unfair, chaotic, or even cruel at times, but the very messiness of life is what makes it so profound. Every joy, every loss, every lesson is part of the infinite journey back to the Source.
